Road Trip! Ocean Shores

We took a quick road trip to Ocean Shores and visited the Coastal Interpretive Center. All the years we've gone to Ocean Shores and never heard of this small, but well set up museum and worth a visit. It was established in 1977 featuring hands on exhibits for the kiddos and some other interesting displays concerning logging, shipwrecks and a beachcombing exhibit with treasures washed up after a Japanese Tsunami in 2011. We were particularly interested in the remains of the shipwreck Catala. The Catala was built in Scotland in 1925 and in 1965 was grounded on the beach at Ocean Shores (Damon Point). It became a local attraction and people climbed all over it. Jack and I both remember doing that as kids. The wreckage was removed in 2006 after injuries and accidents convinced authorities it was a hazard.

According to the news articles, Ocean Shores was considered the Palm Springs of the Northwest in the '60's when development began. Hmmm, lots of rain, on the Pacific ocean....not seeing the similarity to Palm Springs except Ocean Shores does have one golf course! My folks bought a lot at Duck Lake (Ocean Shores) after Pat Boone and other celebrities at the time convinced them it would be the next big golf resort. Of course that never happened but Ocean Shores is still popular for a  beach getaway and that one golf course is still open.

A quick drive onto the beach in Ocean City  so I could "earth" barefoot in the sand, next stop was Lytles Oyster Shack for 3 huge Dungeness crabs, and our last stop was for lunch at The Rusty Tractor in Elma.
