Lake Cushman
Gave up fighting the ants and while we wait for them to die off from morning pest control we checked into the Waterfront Resort at Potlatch for two nights. A nice little Park model with a loft, next to a creek and on Hood Canal. The RV's in front of us don't totally obscure the view of the water.
We didn't stay up to see the Northern lights although many people posted photos of them and I guess it was a “once in a lifetime” experience to see them. Apparently the naked eye sees them as white or light green stripes but when viewed through an i-phone the color is spectacularly enhanced.
Had Crab Benedict at The Halfway house in Brinnon and grabbed a couple slices of homemade pie, strawberry rhubarb and mixed berry, to enjoy later before hopping next door to Whitney Gardens where many of the rhodies and azaleas are in full bloom.
Continuing north on 101 to the Lake Cushman road, Hwy 119. The road is a total of 28 miles but probably half of that is not paved. We drove all the way to Staircase campground. The road was narrow, dusty and heavily pot-holed but we managed. I knew Jack would NEVER take his truck on these roads. Many places required a complete stop to crawl over a pothole. I was scouting out a hike to take Maddy on but doubt I'll go up this road again. Miles and miles of slow going and as the weather gets nicer it gets quite crowded.
Saturday morning we headed north again and drove up to the top of Mt Walker. The 4 mile road to the top is narrow and dusty but not as bad as the road to Staircase. Views from the top on this clear day were spectacular. From the North viewpoint you can see the Hood Canal Bridge, Mount Baker, and some of the Cascades extending into British Colombia. From the South viewpoint Mount Rainier, Mount Saint Helens, Seattle and Tacoma are visible. There is a 2.5 mile hiking trail steep and with switchbacks to the top. We did not hike.
We headed north again and tried to get all the way through Sequim but Loggers Days messed up traffic as there were dozens of log trucks staged on Hwy 101, so we got gas at QFC and turned back to the south. Saw some elk near Dosewallips.
Stopped near Brinnon at the HoneyBee Pizza and Grinders place for chicken wings and a pizza to take back for dinner. The pies were fantastic.
EXTRA BONUS MAY 12 the Orca's passed by again
